10.The “Transference Prayer”. The “Toe Star” is the prescribed physical alignment for the silent recitation of the Transference Prayer. We all know it, though we never speak of it. Now, the silence is broken: [Read more...]

Whiff of success

The 3rd annual Pews (wave hand and make face) Award Ceremony was yet another outstanding success, yet not one feat of running was acknowledged, except perhaps the unselfish act of pacing. Pews (more waving of hand and grimaced expression) are giving to recognize contributions of other things, such as writing about running or being a key player in some memorable event during the year. Each award is unique and therefore highly coveted. When the awards committee say Pew (and wave they hands in front of their face) you know you’ve done something special!  Thank you Iggy, Oddjob, Allstate and Forrest for hosting the fun and congratulations to Suds, recipient of the Doctor Von Award.

Stone Cat 50 Race Report 2009

103_1951

As I was leaving my driveway on the Friday night before the Stone Cat 50 Miler, I said to Gretchen, lets zero the trip odometer on the car and really see where 50 miles is.  Running mostly in the trails, its hard to quantify that distance in my head.  You know, a lot of loops, out and backs, varied terrain, you get the picture. A couple of years back in Scranton,PA at the Steamtown Marathon, I drove to the start of that marathon to drive the route with Gretchen.  It was the first time I drove the route of a point to point marathon.  Wow, it was long.  I really got a sense of the distance we travel.  So, traveling up I-91 the odometer is clicking away.  We reach Hartford, we are not at 50 miles yet.  We turn onto I-84 East and head all the way to Manchester, near the Buckland Hills Mall, and the odometer finally hits 50 miles.  Holy ***t, this is far.  I know 50 miles is far, but “BLAM”, reality check. Inspired By This Amazing Weather

The Indian Summer of life should be a little sunny and a little sad, like the season, and infinite in wealth and depth of tone, but never hustled.

The Indian Summer, the dead Summer’s soul.
Mary Clemmer

Finally, a poem by Emily Dickinson that can be appreciated by anyone who ran the trails these past several days…

Barefoot Running

Here is an extract from a study published on the web site sportscience regarding barefoot running.

Running barefoot is associated with a substantially lower prevalence of acute injuries of the ankle and chronic injuries of the lower leg in developing countries, but well-designed studies of the effects of barefoot and shod running on injury are lacking. Laboratory studies show that the energy cost of running is reduced by about 4% when the feet are not shod. In spite of these apparent benefits, barefoot running is rare in competition, and there are no published controlled trials of the effects of running barefoot on simulated or real competitive performance.
