It is a tradition

IMG_0047

It is a journey of tradition and right of passage, who will be next?

A Thursday departure to Hamburg, PA, a short stay at the Mirotel and quick pilgrimage to Cabala’s. This year, the cycle was unexpectedly broken with a flat car battery and a brief moment of concern about the time it was going to take to reach the Virginia. We were gathered with Loopy, hoping to banish the gremlins of a DNF from last year, Forrest providing support and seeking vicarious experience in preparation for his Beast bid in 2011. ET calmly studying in the background, was looking to repeat his impressive performance of 2009, while Spuds and I, ‘old hands’ at the Hellgate experience, were going to be crew less in Virginia. Questions

If you run a half marathon but don’t announce it, did it take place?

If you enter a race in New Hampshire and are surprised there were hills, did it take place?

The answer to these questions might just be here.

At this point it would be appropriate to offer congratulations, if only one could be sure it actually took place.

Catalina Eco Marathon

The Catalina Eco Marathon is well worth a trip to the west coast. OK, so I was fortunate to be traveling on business and suspect that had that not been the case I may not have looked for or entered this event. But having run it I would consider making the journey again. The race takes place on Catalina Island about a 1 hour ferry ride form Long Beach. The island is a playground to meet all tastes be it sailing, boating, hiking/running, fine dinning or playing the casino. About a mile inland roads give way to dirt and a network of hiking trails crisscross scrub land grazed by buffalo. [Read more...]

Scoobie at NYC

Finishing in 4:04 Scobbie clocked another New York marathon last weekend. Any marathon is remarkable, but just a few days before she was laid up with a sinus infection. Bravo Scoobie!

Nothing baron about this performance

George ‘the Baron’ Papuga ran the Cape Cod marathon on October 31st and finished in 5:42:42. In the grand scheme of things his time didn’t break any records, but George has pulled himself back following knee surgery earlier in the year. Bravo George!

Trust none of what you hear and less of what you see.

Waking up Sunday morning I was excited to be running my first endurance trail race. Actually, my trail running resume only included one other trail run a few years ago at the 10k Leather man’s Loop. My biggest fear was getting lost in the race and having people come searching for me long after the race was over. I listened intently at the pre-race instructions to try to pick up any information I could to help me navigate this journey. Mr. Bimble gave great emphasis on the type of markings that would be found on the course, flags, tape and big paper plates with arrows. OK, I thought this won’t be too bad after all. But then came the words “someone will get lost, they always do”. [Read more...]
