Pew - the movie

November 18, 2008 by Mr Bimble · 6 Comments

The event that rivals the Oscars, has nothing to do with running but generously rewards acts of BS was held in Guilford last night. Walking away with the coveted Doctor Von award was Shaggy for a touching poem about Scoobie that appeared on the Scobbie and Shaggy Blog earlier in the year. Star turn was performed by El Torro, suitably decked out in a tutu and magic wand, with swiveling hips that were the envy of several ladies in the audience. Read more

Wave Hand and Make a Face!

November 9, 2008 by Mr Bimble · 5 Comments

As the last of the fall leaves flutter gracefully to cover the rocks and roots of woodland trails, thoughts now turn towards that event of the year that can not be missed. The Pews (wave had and make face) Lit Sir Awards are upon us for their third year. How could the prospect of awards like Suresh Unplugged or Mort’s Bath be superseded, not to mention the Doctor Von Prize? To make it a date you will need to turn up in person next Monday (November 17th). So mark you calendar - it is a ceremony you can’t afford to miss!

Babysitting a violin - Bluff Race Director’s Report

Bluff_1259.JPG

It must rank as one of the most unusual race director functions, but minutes before the start of the Bluff 50k I was asked if I could find a shaded safe place for a valuable violin belonging to one of the competitors. Just like ultra runners, it seems that antique instruments don’t do well if exposed to excessively hot conditions for too long, and unfortunately regular applications of Gatorade or salt tablets don’t do them much good either! Everything else about the ‘Bluff’ though did seem to live up to its pre-race hype of being “…exactly what you think it isn’t…”, when a few minutes after 8am on Sunday October 26th, the 1st Bimbler’s Bluff 50k officially started. Last Great Bite of the Bluff and more..

October 12, 2008 by Mr Bimble · 5 Comments

Saturday October 11th saw a final big Bite of the Bluff take place before pre-race tapering starts. Various chunks of the course were nibbled on from a complete start to finish meal, to mid-section snacks. To add to the race director’s stress, everyone reported getting lost at some stage despite carrying maps or directions! So, to anyone worried about getting lost on race day - I suggest you memorize the faces in the picture and remember NOT to follow any of them. Sometimes ‘home advantage’ isn’t necessarily a good thing! Read more

The 2008 Pew(wave hand in front of face)litsir Awards!!!

October 8, 2008 by iggy · 5 Comments

The Pews are coming in November….. the committee is finalizing the date as we speak/write.

Please send your nominations for the 2008 Pew(wave hand in front of face)litsir awards to the committee ASAP!!!! Remember these trophies are awarded to individuals for various categories of achievements that do not include running generally! That’s right, these are journalistic awards usually given for extreme contributions of humor or for anything really embarrassing - especially if it happens while another Bimbler is able to bear witness in some way. If you are new to this tremendous honor you might have to ask a fellow Bimbler how the committee’s selection process works.  Read more

An Overnighter

October 7, 2008 by forrest · 3 Comments

It is hard to believe, but it has been 2 years since our last “official” Bimbler multi-day training run, the renowned Mohawk-AT Fastpack of 2006. Hence, some, particularly Ultra, were itching to recreate the experience. In an effort to cast a wider net, he planned a less aggressive and more casual run, with a minimum of running whilst wearing heavy packs, and a somewhat limited number of undulations. Still, it is the fall marathon season, and it is a Grand Slam year, etc… so it was difficult to get a large group together. In the end, there were only four of us who hit the trail: Ultra, me, Lamb, and Fruit Punch. Read more
