Burning River 100

Instead of waiting until the end to tell you how AMAZING my crew team and pacers were I am going to tell you this first. I would never have made it without them although they might protest. All I wanted to know each time I saw them was when do I see you again. That was as far ahead as I could think, and I never thought back. Read more
Vermont 100 – A Year and a Day
July 26, 2010 by forrest · 13 Comments
The year and a day rule was a principle of English law holding that a death was conclusively presumed not to be murder (or any other homicide) if it occurred more than a year and one day since the act (or omission) that was alleged to have been its cause. The rule also applied to the offence of assisting with a suicide. Read more
What you don’t know will get results

I have now confirmed my long-held theory that the secret to trail-running success is not consistent mileage or strength training or nutrition or mental fortitude, but selecting a sufficiently obscure, small, and unknown event, ideally one where you are likely to be the only person in your age group. It also helps if you don’t tell all your speedy running buddies that you plan to go. (Ever heard of the Haddam April Fool’s 10.5 Mile Race? the Greenville TN 30K? the Colchester Land Trust 5 miler? I promise… this strategy works, though it seems to be a bit easier for women to pull off). Read more
Girl Run!

Girl Run July 13, 2010
My wish for rain was granted, Ticket promised storms and she delivered… or was it the collective energy the girls generated by meeting in the woods just before dusk, or maybe all of the above?
Guthrie lead us in a reverse route up the hill and into the woods in her usual effortless, bird-like style. We hoped for showers, the ground was saturated but the rain had stopped coming down at the start of our run. As we entered the woods we experienced “the wet leaves dripping on us as if it only rained under the canopy of trees” phenomenon. We “woohhoed” and “hollered” in our primal tongues as we made our way through the trails, the earth so soft under foot, we began to maintain a magical rhythm! And then the skies opened up and it began to POUR!! Woohoo!! We celebrated and enjoyed pagan like cathartic nature rituals. Smudging, synergetic energy and the pure thrill of running like wild animals along single track in the rain were the highlights of my experience tonight. We all enjoyed the rain washing and drenching us as we stood on bridges over creeks allowing the water to wash away the stress of our daily lives.. off our bodies dripping down into the river to be washed away forever further down stream. Finger Lakes Fifties: Following The Rules
July 8, 2010 by forrest · 7 Comments
Mr. Bimble has, from time to time, admonished me to not pay TOO much money per mile of race. As a “good consumer”, I strive for the “holy grail” of $1/mile. Ultra recently reminded me that it is best to not spend more time driving to/from the race than is spent RUNNING the race. With all these rules firmly in mind, I went to the race to accomplish some goals. Read more
Four on the Fifth
July 6, 2010 by Mr Bimble · 5 Comments
While enjoying coffee picnic style on the Guilford green after a run with Bimblers, word went around that the Chester 4 on the 5th is a great race to try out. It had been a few months since I had raced and I thought it was about time I signed myself up for one. Read more
Hot Fun In the “almost” Summertime

(one view from the support crew’s perspective)
(aka, a long report for a short race)
MrBimble ran another 100-miler this weekend through waist-high snow (in June). Cool, but you think that was hard, I had to run five miles with MasterPo (wink, or was it, he had to run it with me) at the Branford Road Race on Sunday. Read more
The Big Horn 100
June 21, 2010 by Mr Bimble · 8 Comments
After a leisurely breakfast it was an unusual treat to head to the start of the Big Horn 100 a little after 8 am. The pre-race briefing at the finish area at Scot Park, Dayton, was shorter than many other races of this kind with the exception of the Bear 100 which I recall lasted no more than about 8 minutes! Changing of the guard at Nipmuck
June 7, 2010 by Mr Bimble · 2 Comments
The 27th running of the Nipmuck Marathon was Nipmuck Dave’s last one as race director. True to form his last pre-race briefing was unique in that it contained just a few words regarding the trails and the hazards of running them. Instead he positioned six volunteers (myself amongst them) around the assembled runners with boom boxes. Read more
There Is Nothing Like Your First Ultra!
June 3, 2010 by Mr Bimble · 14 Comments
Last fall, after the Bluff Relay, I decided that it was time to challenge myself and push myself to do a longer trail race. Many were talking about a Spring 50K and I found myself interested in the conversation. It was finally decided that Pineland Farms was the race and many Bimblers were going to participate. What a great way to do my first ultra race, in the company of friends! I gave in and registered. There was no turning back once I saw my name on the official list of runners. I was committed.
