Jerry - Thanks for another fantastic day on the Bluff!! :wav I had a great experience running the relay with Ticket. Congrats to all the runners, especially those completing their first ultra! Thanks also to the volunteers. That is quite a job and everyone today was so positive, helpful and encouraging. Jerry, if you need anyone to go back over parts of the course to look for additional ribbons, let me know. :pompom :pompom

Jerry,

Thank you, thank you, thank you. An outstanding race, again. The runners' dinner, the event, your sponsors, the goodies, the trail, the company, it was ALL good. Also, I really appreciate your attention to detail on such items like the weather. Not only did you arrange, AGAIN, for a very muddy trail, but also for blue skies and PERFECT temperatures. I can think of many other RDs (one of whom's initials are D.H.) who, for whatever reason, seem to overlook this issue

Also, MANY thanks to all of the volunteers. Sometimes, in the midst of the run, it is hard to remember if you thanked everyone along the way.

I know it sounds selfish, but with the amazingly good time we all have at BOTH The Bluff AND The Bash, it is a shame that you only direct TWO races per year...   :vgood

Phew! The day really couldn't have provided better weather. The Bluff is a lot of fun to organize but it is even more rewarding to witness those taking part, seeing their joy (or was that relief?) crossing the line and listening to their stories from their race. The winner expressed surprise at his 'slow' time. He finished in 4:31. To many that is fast, to those who know the course it is fast, his reaction is evidence that the Bluff course is challenging and much more than an 'easy 50K' (if there is such a thing)! I'm in the process of putting together a RD race report, so more details from the day will follow. If anyone feels inclined to write their own accounts, as always I'll be glad to post them. If anyone has pictures and would like to send them, please do.

The support from the volunteers was amazing, there were people helping who don't normally run with us, but who made the journey to Guilford yesterday just to help.

It's all enough to make you want to do it all again next year! (October 24th, 2010, for those who like to plan early)

What an amazing (and new) experience to be able to race surrounded on the course and off by so very many friendly, familiar faces!! Thanks to the Bimbles, the volunteers and cheering relay runners, Diana and the Dals, and all the Bimblers I got to chat with along the way and at the finish.

A special thanks to Catamount for the companionship and pacing help at the beginning, to Snobody for the trail guidance, sunny attitude, and hill inspiration (and I think attempting to break my fall?) in the middle, and to Lefty--again, an impossibly disappearing rabbit--at the end! You and so many others made my first ultra a great and memorable experience.

Special thanks to Shellygirl and Lefty for that beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. I think I saw a small tear in the eyes of many runners, particularly the cadets from West Point  Then again, I think I saw a few tears at the END of the race as well

50 K virgin no more! :bsflag
Thanks to you Mr. Bimble for hosting a wonderful, challenging race, and all the training tips beforehand! During the race I had some "choice" words for you, but in the afterglow, once I crossed the finish line, and that running hallucination, both visual and physical, of my grandmother finally, literally, getting off my back, I was able to feel those comments melt away to reveal, as Lefty commented, "The Truth Within".

Thanks to all those volunteers! You're so supportive! That definitely kept me going.

Downhill, the answer to your question, though somewhat delayed, is, "hell yes, I'll run that damn race again!!"
Lefty, thanks for the pacing and conversation, and we certainly gave the best "Bimbler's woo-hoo" over the top of the Bluff!
Nadia, great race! Only a slight bobble, gracefully done, over the bubbling brook. The judges didn't even notice it!
Forrest, I'm glad you didn't wait for me to pace you!
Iggy-Thanks for the words of encouragement-I really did want to stop, and even though I didn't catch that guy, he didn't get too far ahead either!

A special thanks to those of you who shared the trail with me over the past... well, very long time, training me every step of the way.

Congrats to all who participated in any way. :wav

I too would like to chime in with heartfelt thanks for making my first Ultra distance race an enjoyable (did I just say that) one. I was really amazed by all the choices at the aid stations. M&M's, my favorite. I also was surprised and thankful for the support, all the cheering! I honestly feel I was better prepared for my first IM. Although we did all the "sections" of the Bluff; putting them together was quite the effort. I couldn't walk yesterday. So begs the question; what's next?

Lostc,

The typical "what's next" is to sign up for another one, before you get to think about it too much. Of course, the "other ones" are not quite as perfect as a Mr. Bimble production, but many are very, very good.

Can't wait till the 3rd running of the Bluff!!!!!!!!! :vgood Thank You SO much for a wonderful experience once again Mr B for organizing such a splendid event!!

I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of "Bimbler Bluff Day", I didn't want it to end--yes, you heard that right!!! I kept replaying moments of the day and race in my head while on a solo trail run through Cockaponsett the following day (monday)---and I just was in the best mood ever :D . Relaying with my "home girl", aka SG, was a great experience. I hadnt participted in a relay since the 4x800 in high school  ..... and I dont think I have to say just how MUCH AWESOMER (if that's word?!) running as part of Team "INDECISION" (thanks for the name by the way Mr B) was than doing the former :goofy!!!!! Special Thanks to Guthrie...listening to Tom Jones in the car and picturing his "chicken shaking hair head" was very entertaining!!! Going to each aid station before reaching my destination at Braemore was a great way to catch all the runners at various points and get that exciting adrenaline pumping feeling :greenbanana knowing that SG was making her way along the course as fast as she could so that she could then relax and rely on me to do my part of the "team race". It's definitley a different feeling when you're "running for someone else" and not just yourself, cause you dont want to dissapoint your team member, so there is almost more pressure, in a good way, to perform at your best that day. I found myself thinking, "This is for Shelly Girl-keep up the pace, charge down those rocky descents, get up those hills---hurry!!!!". :runthing My team member became my inspiration and motivation while I was out there on the course, so that I could reach the finish as fast as I could and hopefully make her proud.
SG, Thanks for being so GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!-- :medic Luv ya!!

It was a great day and I can't really say anymore that hasn't already been said. The expressions of joy and sense of achievement make putting the race together all the more worthwhile. The support of the volunteers was amazing, everyone threw themselves into making the day a success and I've received several emails from runners to say thank you and how much everyone made them 'feel like part of the family'.

Perhaps one of the most moving comments came from Terri Hayes of SC. I hope she won't mind me posting a copy of her email, but I thought you guys might enjoy reading it:

Quote:
Thanks to you, an old lady's dream came true. Had I not come to Connecticut to run Bimbler's Bluff, my grandson would not have done the run with me. For years, I have had a dream of having one of my 4 children or one of my 10 grandchildren do a marathon or an ultra with me. So the years went by and none of them ever stepped up to do it and knowing I might not have too many more years of running ultras left, I was starting to think it would never happen.
When I contacted my grandson and let him know I was coming to CT, he said if he did not have duty, he would not only go to the run with me, but would run with me. Well, I didn't really take him too seriously, but when I went to the sub base on Saturday to pick him, he had his running stuff packed and still said he was going to do it.
I so appreciate that you let him join me on the course, and I so appreciate you also letting me enter your race. It was an absolutely wonderful experience. Even though I was abit concerned whether Ryan could do the entire distance, as he has never done any long distance running, he did fine. He kept telling me how great he felt, how he was having such a good time, was really enjoying it, he never complained. And I was having such a wonderful time. It was truly a memorable day. I will say that it was a much tougher course than I expected, but it was beautiful and you did an awesome job - course was well-marked, aid stations were great, volunteers were so nice. Also, thank you for giving Ryan a shirt - he now has a momento from his first ultra. I do hope Ryan will run more ultras in the future, as I feel with some training, he could become a good ultrarunner, leaving his old grandmother way behind. But it will be difficult for a few years, as he soon will be spending many months at a time down under water in a submarine, however, since his first ultra experience was so good for him, I think he will do more.
Again, it was a pleasure meeting you and thanks so much for everything.
Terri

A week before the race Trail Runner was pushing for dates for the 2010 season! Mark your calendars, the Bluff will be back on October 24th, 2010. :dohhh
